Training and Education for Schools and Families
What are the elements of social skills training?
Working with students to help them learn to:
• use and read facial expressions
• make proper eye contact
• stay on topic during conversation
• monitor body language and body in space awareness
• take conversational turns
• monitor speech such as volume, tone, and rate
• understand their sensory needs
• take the perspective of others

Why do social skills groups?
• children with social skills deficits do not learn by imitation only, they need clear directions and frequent practice to learn the skills that come naturally to other children

• children with social skills deficits are knowledge based learners and do best learning these skills with other children with similar issues rather than with typical children

• the social skills groups provide a safe and comfortable environment for socially challenged children to learn and practice new skills

Who can benefit from social skills training?
Children who have a diagnosis of Asperger’s, NLD (non-verbal learning disorder), High-Functioning Autism, other PDD’s (pervasive developmental disorder), ADHD, sensory integration difficulties, and other emotional issues who may be going through the diagnostic process.

How are social skills taught?
• successful social skills programs use a step by step approach that includes modeling, coaching, reinforcement, and many opportunities for practice

• research indicates that having plans for generalization and maintenance of newly acquired skills is important for the development of these skills to become part of the child’s repertoire

• having the child’s parents and teachers involved in the program ensures the best chance for the child to be successful
